#19 Know Your World: Ethnic groups of Central Asia

▢️ Central Asia is a maze (=labyrinth) of borderlines and when you zoom out you may find that the ethnic groups inhabiting this part of the world are also strangely distributed. All in all a real ethnic hotchpotch (=things or people mixed up without any order)!

#85 Afandi Quiz: Who said it?

▢️ β€œI’ve never really wanted to go to Japan. Simply because I don’t like eating fish. And I know that’s very popular out there in Africa.”

Who said it?
Bingo!

πŸ’‘ It was of course the dumb blonde American pop star who thought Japan was in Africa.

#20 Know Your World: Loneliness in the UK

▢️ Western countries’ people tend to be more independent and have less family bonds (=connection between humans). While this is good for their career development there is a price to pay – many people feel lonely, especially senior citizens. Watch this report about an elderly (=old-age) lady in the UK.

#86 Afandi Quiz: What is this thing?

Here’s a strange-looking thing. What could it be?

πŸ‘‰@afandi_englishπŸ‘ˆ #thing_quiz
O sole miiio!

πŸ’‘ This thing is a singing floating pasta timer – the one thing you really need when you don’t know how to long to cook your pasta (=Italian noodles). You put the thing in the boiling water and starts singing when the pasta is β€œal dente” – not too soft but still slightly hard, just the way Italians love their pasta.

#9 Short Film: Cream

▢️ Here’s an animated short film about a miraculous (=wondrous, like a miracle) β€œcream” that fixes everything. It’s so good in fact that it must disappear again – a lesson in how the super rich control our thoughts with the media.

πŸ”€ Subtitles provided.

#124 Our favourite mistakes: Grammar

▢️ Please translate the following sentence:
B guruh 14-betdagi 3-mashqni qilishi kerak.

❌ Perhaps you think it is:
B group should do number 3 exercise on 14th page.

βœ… Well, it should be:
Group B should do exercise number 3 on page 14.

❓Why?

❗️ Numbered (or β€˜lettered’) items like groups, teams, exercises, tasks and pages but also bus lines, candidates, buildings, etc. are formed by adding the number (or letter) after, not before. Grammatically these are treated as names and as such do not take articles.

❗️ When there is a number you add the word β€œnumber” before the number, i.e. exercise number 3 or page number 14. You can also use the abbreviation β€œNo.”, i.e. School No. 23.

❗️ Russian and Uzbek use a lot of ordinal numbers (like 2nd, 5th, 33rd). In English they are used when the whole of something is considered, i.e. the 3rd task (out of 5 tasks).

❗️ You can't use hyphens (-) for ordinal numbers in English.

#36 Movie Time: Remember (2015)

▢️ Today’s movie is a πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦Canadian-πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺGerman drama-thriller about old survivors of World War 2. An old Jewish man sets out on a journey to find the old Nazi who killed his family in Auschwitz, Nazi Germany’s most notorious (=famously bad) concentration camp (=prison camp for political prisoners). See how he manages to find the culprit (=bad guy) in a surprising final showdown (=argument or fight that settles a long disagreement).

πŸ”€ Subtitles provided.
