Когда нам нужно сказать, что где-то что-то есть (находится), то самой подходящей конструкцией для передачи данного смысла является There is/ There are...

Носители русского языка часто совершают ошибку, когда начинают английское предложение с обстоятельства места. Например, так и хочется сказать "In the garden is an apple tree". Но это неправильно!

Правильный вариант:
- There is an apple tree in the garden. - В саду яблоня. (да, по-русски именно так коротко)

- There are some books on the shelf. - На полке книги.

Обратите внимание, что оборот THERE IS/ THERE ARE не переводится. Перевод предложения мы начинаем с конца!

Еще одна важная деталь: There is используем, когда говорим о каком-то предмете или человеке в единственном числе, а There are - когда говорим о нескольких вещах или людях.
