A bit later than expected but better late then never. Here is the video footage of the recent joint Eastern - London protest against the grooming sessions at Tate Britain (Feb 11th) where a mentally disturbed man dressed as a woman thinks it is acceptable to read stories to young children. Even worse is that the owners and management of this revered institution promotes this appalling behaviour.

Britain is broken, but Patriotic Alternative can build back better.

Help us by playing your part.

The last Sunday of each month sees a hike somewhere in the region. This weekend a team of our activists enjoyed a walk along the River Stour, between the smallest town in Suffolk, Clare and the medieval village of Cavendish.

These settlements became immensely wealthy during the 15th C thanks to the demand for fine quality Suffolk wool which was sold all over England and the near continent.

Join us on our hikes and see some of the splendour of our rich history and beautiful landscapes of our Eastern region.

Folklore on Friday: Bewitched wagon wheels of Essex

An elderly man living in Rayleigh told folklorist Charlotte Craven Mason a number of stories about witches which she published in 1928. One of these was about a man going up Bread and Cheese hill at Thundersley, near Benfleet in Essex. He was driving a wagon and while he was going up the hill, he overtook an old woman whose boot lace was undone and trailing on the ground. He had just called out to her about it, when suddenly one of the wheels came off his wagon and rolled down the hill. He ran after it hitting it with his whip. This made the witch cry out in pain “oh don't hit it!”

The man clearly suspected that his wagon had been bewitched by her or he would not have done such an apparent senseless thing as whipping the wheel. Winnifred Beaumont in 1958 said that at Wormingford in the north of the county, the story was told in the 1880s of how a witch called “Old Jemima” who lived on the Wisten Road would stop horses by entering the wheels of a wagon or plough. One carter stopped in this way whipped the wheels of his wagon until the old girl came out from under the wagon a-hollering for mercy. Striking the supposedly bewitched object was a way of causing sympathetic pains in the witch, making her reveal herself. Why the Thundersley witch resented being spoken to, given that the man's motive was apparently kindly is unexplained. Possibly she was upset by his tone or form of words, like the man she bewitched and a “Mr S” at Canewdon; a village six miles north east of Thundersley where a tradition remains and is believed by many, that so long as the steeple on the church exists there will always be six witches in the village.
