The US dollar moved higher against its major trading partners early Wednesday ahead of the release of ADP private payrolls data for August at 8:30 am ET, the Chicago PMI reading for August at 9:45 am ET and weekly oil stocks data at 10:30 am ET.

Markets will be particularly focused on the ADP report, the first in three months, ahead of the August employment report on Friday. Earlier Wednesday, the Mortgage Bankers Association reported another decline in mortgage applications due to higher interest rates.

Cleveland Federal Reserve Bank President Loretta Mester is scheduled to speak at 8:00 am ET, followed later by Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic at 6:30 pm ET.

A quick summary of foreign exchange activity heading into Wednesday:


USDEUR
slipped to 0.9985 from 1.0016 at the Tuesday US close and 1.0031 at the same point Tuesday morning. EU consumer inflation accelerated in August according to data released earlier Wednesday, adding fuel to expectations that the European Central Bank will need to raise rates by at least 50 basis points, and perhaps more, at its next meeting on Sept. 9.


GBPUSD
fell to 1.162 from 1.1654 at the Tuesday US close and 1.1729 at the same point Tuesday morning. There are no UK data on Wednesday's schedule. The Bank of England is expected to raise interest rates by another 50 basis points at its Sept. 15 meeting.

USDCAD
rose to 1.3117 from 1.3093 at the Tuesday US close and 1.2992 at the same point Tuesday morning. Canadian GDP is scheduled to be released at 8:30 am ET Wednesday. The Bank of Canada's monetary policy committee meets on Sept. 7, where the BOC is expected to continue its tightening policy.

USDJPY
fell slightly to 138.729 from 138.7989 at the Tuesday US close but was still well above the 138.0882 level at the same point Tuesday morning. Japanese retail sales rose more than expected in July while consumer confidence moved higher and industrial production surprised to the upside, data released overnight showed. The Bank of Japan's ultra-accommodative stance is expected to remain unchanged at its next scheduled meeting on Sept. 21-22.
