Complex + Complex = Complicated ๐Ÿฆ

๐Ÿ”ฅMany of the band 6 and 6.5 examples contain very long sentences that sometimes run over three lines of the page. This is because people mistakenly believe you must use as many long, complex structures as possible to achieve a high band . As with vocabulary, your grammatical skill is NOT measured in quantities, or by the length of your sentences, but by your ability to explain ideas clearly and connect them together logically . This means that there is a link between grammatical accuracy, and coherence and cohesion.

๐Ÿ”ฅKey idea; if you explain complex ideas using long, Complex sentences, your ideas become complicated and difficult to follow. Make the examiner's job easier, not more difficult, confused examiner means a lower score

In written English, people often use cause somebody to do something rather than make somebody do to something as it sounds more formal. His attitude caused him to be unpopular with colleagues.

Writing tip ๐Ÿ’ก| Be clear

The practical advice here is to select your best idea and write about that. That means not writing everything you know โ€“ leave some ideas out.
Donโ€™t worry if it is not your best explanation, worry about whether it is your clearest explanation.

Write about what you know โ•

You are being tested on the quality of your English, not on the quality of your ideas.
So you shouldnโ€™t worry about finding the โ€œright answerโ€.
You need a simple idea that you can clearly describe and justify.

IELTS Writing Tip ๐Ÿ” | @IELTS_8

Don't use the following expressions as they're unsuitable for an IELTS essay.

One side of the coin/The other side of the coin

(these are too informal and not appropriate for IELTS writing)

Supporters of ... /Advocates of ... (These are unsuitable for most topics and best avoided)

Experts believe...
(IELTS essays are about the views of people in general rather than experts)

Follow the standard structure๐Ÿ“œ

To get maximum points, you should follow the standard structure. IELTS Writing task 1 should be written as follows:

Introduction: briefly describe what your graph shows.

Overview: state main trends.

Specific details: describe specific changes, providing data.

Don't write too many words
โœ…

Itโ€™s a bad idea to write more than 300 words in task 2 and more than 200 words in task 1.

โ€ขFirstly, itโ€™s difficult for the examiner to read long essays and he/she will check your writing less carefully.

โ€ขSecondly, you are likely to make more mistakes and have less time to check what you wrote.
