Hari nasional yang diperingati setiap tahunnya pada tanggal 9 Februari dalam rangka memperingati Hari Ulang Tahun PWI. Hari Pers Nasional ditetapkan melalui Keputusan Presiden (Keppres) RI No. 5 tahun 1985 yang ditandatangani oleh Presiden Soeharto pada tanggal 23 Januari 1985.
Hari Pers Nasional dicetus akibat peran wartawan. Peran wartawan sebagai aktivitas pemberitaan membuat masyarakat membangkitkan kesadarannya. Sejarah Hari Pers Nasional juga tak lepas kaitannya dengan Organisasi PWI yang terbentuk pada 9 Februari 1946.
