This bar is worldwide famous. It is stunning and visited by thousands people a year. The GQ magazine once said about it: "If this bar can't convince the haters, nothing can." Have you already guessed what we are speaking about? Black Rock Whisky Bar for sure!

It is located in the City of London, in the very historical part with its authentic buildings and ancient history. But the décor is not so traditional - Black Rock Whisky Bar has done away with a traditional bar in favour of six glass cabinets stocked with 250 bottles of world whisky available by the dram and have filled a 185-year-old oak tree with two of their own special house blend whiskies, fitted it with taps and placed it front and centre for imbibing pleasure.

And instead of an actual bar, the bartenders are always on the move, roaming from table to table to the sound of funk, soul and Nineties hip-hop, or sat at one end of the long wooden table that stretches down the centre of the room.
Scotch production is known for its strict laws introduced by the Government throughout time. The regulations are there to set boundaries, which help to define and protect a spirit (and avoid it being faked). Also these restrictions support the Scottish whisky makers. So they are:

-out of the country you can export (in bulks) only blended whisky;
-malts can leave their motherland in bottles no more than one litre;
-in case you want to bottle whisky in your country and mark it ‘Scotch’ on the label, you should register as a Scotch bulk importer. The procedure is not so complicated and we are here ready to help.
AQI (Air Quality Index) claims that Scotland has one of the cleanest atmospheres in Europe. Its index is just 7-10, while above the main land the average is 27-34. That is why Scotch is so amazing – it just doesn’t have any pollution!
Whisky is pleasant, somehow obsessing and definitely irresistible. But what is more – it’s good for health!

Among spirits wine is famous for its healthy qualities but whisky is not worse, it’s even better!

Firstly whisky has a powerful antioxidant that can neutralize cancer-causing free radicals in the human body. Single malt whisky is said to contain more antioxidants than red wine.

What’s more, a study published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information concluded that drinking one to six drinks weekly could lower your risk of dementia!

A 2010 study released by the Research Society on Alcoholism found that middle-aged and older adult moderate drinkers had a lower overall mortality rate than heavy drinkers or even non-drinkers.

And finally whisky just makes you happier. Cheers!
W- who, when, where?

These three words always go alongside with the history of whisky invention. The spirit is so popular nowadays that two the most famous country (Scotland and Ireland) have endless debates about it.

The process of distillation has been known since ancient times and its traces can be found in every European country. Originally it is thought to be taken to the Islands, Ireland particularly by either the Christian monks or soldiers coming back from crusades. It happened around the 11th – 13th century.

Irish people like to say they invented Whisky. The Scots however argue with it and their main proof is that the first written statement about whisky (1494) comes from Scotland and that therefore Whisky was born there.

So, Ireland VS Scotland – what do you think?
Investing in whisky has lots of benefits and today we would like to speak about one thing that really makes it so appealing – whisky casks cannot be faked.

Unlike some other assets such as pieces of art or jewelers that are forged easily whisky casks have strong protection against this mischief. Due to severe regulations in place by the Scottish government, each cask must be kept in bonded warehouses since the time it was distilled and specialists check it regularly in order to avoid any harm or imperfection.

These restrictions were introduced to ensure that the authenticity of each bottle labeled as Scotch Whisky can be confirmed in accordance with all standards adopted by the industry.

All casks have their own records that are held by the keepers and it is possible to track the cask history from the very beginning. It cannot appear in the records out of nowhere and therefore cannot be faked.
When we describe whiskies the necessity to mention its motherland goes without saying. The Speyside is mentioned more often than others and si thought to be the ‘classical’ region.

So, this land is not vast and sometimes is called ‘a golden triangle’ for it is densely populated with distilleries. The name origins in the river Spey, that flows lazily to the North Sea.

The region has milder climate than the Islands and probably that is how the popularity of whisky production is explained. The Speyside is particularly beautiful in autumn.

Speyside whiskies are usually lighter and sweeter than other Scotch single malts. These malts are noted in general for their elegance and complexity, sometimes with a refined smokiness but more often with fruitiness.
The period of 2015-2020 has been analyzed by Whisky Stat and the Distillery Track Record Index has grown by 110 % in average (based on three leading distilleries).

The most popular single malts are still Macallan, Bowmore and Dalmore. But still there are dozens of other high-quality distilleries that keep increasing their production and compete with the famous ones. These brands also deserve investment attention because the market is developing and new players take part in the game.
Since ancient times people have various hobbies that reflect their characters. These hobbies can tell a lot about our psychology and scientists have made inquiries into this subject. Evolutionary theorists suggest a collection was a way for a man to attract potential mates by signaling his ability to accumulate resources. Well, it may have worked for our Stone Age ancestors.

Whisky collecting is unique in a way because it has a difficult choice – to drink or not to drink. Some collectors believe, that when you drink a whisky, that’s when it comes alive and that’s when it dies. So some don’t even take a dram of their favorites and prefer them be kept.

Others act differently – they buy simultaneously two bottles. One to drink, another to keep. But what to do if a bottle is only one and there aren’t any alternatives? Everyone decides for themselves.
Distilleries like it when customers think that everything in whisky is natural. It includes saying that they take water directly from rivers and springs.

Well, definitely it is so but anyway water undertakes some filtration. Sometimes it is treated with UV light to deal with microbial contamination. Water cleaned this way preserves certain qualities, for example peaty aroma or taste that later transfers to whisky.

There are four types of water used at the production.

Mashing water (hot) is added to the grist to produce the mash. For condensation cool water is used, it lets the alcohol vapour return into liquid during distillation. Pure water (dilution water) is added to the New Make Spirit (NMS) to reduce to filling strength for maturation. And last technical water aims to clean equipment and other things.

Only waters that deal directly with whisky and ingredients require a certain standard of quality.
Test your best

An absolutely astonishing way to prove your whisky fake – or original.

It’s not a surprise that when someone wants to purchase a bottle of whisky they need to know its quality what is a matter of great importance. Bad alcohol can provoke health problems.

An Analytical method of testing a whisky through the bottle can help. This approach essentially compares the original light source against the light that passes through whisky. Analysts are able to detect different compounds present in the substance. Those results are then compared to established norms, helping to identify whether the test substance is legitimate or adulterated.

The new method introduces a “geometry of excitation and collection” that compensates for through-bottle sensing. As an added benefit, this application of the new geometry doesn’t require drastic modifications in order to administer the test.
The science moves forwards so quickly and gives us such opportunities.

Impressive, isn't it?
2020 has been quite tough for the majority of people and yet there are always bright sights.

Many distilleries have been temporarily closed because of the restrictions and the amount of whisky produced during this year is less than it would be. Trade body the Scotch Whisky Association said in a statement on 14 May during the first lockdown that “87% of production sites are either operating at reduced capacity or have closed entirely”. What does it mean for whisky investment?

The decline in production means the value of whisky produced in 2020 will be above all levels in several years. Whiskey and Wealth Club said that owners of 2020 casks are part of an exclusive group of investors. In 15 to 20 years’ time, it will be a profitable asset to own a bottle or cask of whisky that was made in 2020, the firm said. It is also important to buy this whisky from a well-known brand and the longer the owner waits to sell it, the more it will be worth.

So, do not blow your chance – buy now.
Today we would like to bring to your attention a uniquely attractive asset in a form of a whisky cask:
ARDMORE 2009

This whisky in an ex-bourbon cask from the stable Ardmore distillery is perfectly mature and can work well both being released now or aged for a while. The cask is expected to exit smoothly and bring great benefit.

What to expect in 2021?

True to say that many people would like to forget everything that happened in 2020 but is it possible for 2021 to be even worse? Surely not. Though this year promises to be quite tough for the vast majority for many reasons – the epidemic situation is far from settling down what leads to further economic stagnation and losses.

However the prospects are quite optimistic if we take into consideration everything we learnt from the previous year. The world has made a great step towards online-life and this digital input cannot be underestimated.

When it comes to whisky we happily admit that digital reality has rooted even in this conservative area. During the lockdowns whisky specialists would make podcasts and online tasting events to remind their viewers that life is still amazingly good.

On the other hand, there are always some I-don’t-like-it people, who start moving against this new reality and deny the implemented measures. We do believe that everything is done to protect us and we may not come back to our previous lifestyle soon, but we definitely have great benefit from the reality of 2020 and are ready to welcome 2021 whatever it’s like.
Whisky investment year 2021 is opposite to the common 2021. We’ll try to explain.

While all the world is suffering from severe consequences of lockdowns, the whisky industry is probably the only one that benefits. The reason for this is that simple – when a distillery closes prices for its casks and releases go through the roof because everybody understands: there won’t be such a whisky anymore. These are the last. These are priceless.

In 2020 many distilleries took a break to protect their employees, what makes a cask made that year quite a rare thing. What makes this cask bottling even rarer 10 years later. Or 30? It makes a good price progression and investing in casks even in unpredictable 2021 is still relevant and promising.

A classic example - the Port Ellen distillery which had experienced a number of closing and after each time its bottles would become more pricey because no one knew whether it was going to open again.

Ladies and whisky

Whisky for a long time used to be a men’s spirit only and ladies could not take anything stronger than wine and Champaign. Fortunately, the world has changed and now ladies know whisky as well as men and sometimes even better.

Helena Hugo runs a Scottish-themed restaurant and brewery that stocks an enviable selection of whiskies. She is a great specialist and a great connoisseur. Crucially her love of whisky ranges from traditional styles to the contemporary, and is not geographically confined to Scotland.
She became greatly interested in whisky years ago in 1990 so she has been lucky enough to be a witness of many great things throughout these years. Helena tried numerous whiskies and definitely found her beloved ones. Today much of her time is taken up by the business that her whisky enthusiasm eventually led her to – Bredaryds Wärdshus, a Scottish-themed hotel, restaurant and brewery in Bredaryd.

She’s got a nice collection of whiskies and, what is quite unusual, Helena keeps opening them from time to time. She says that nothing lasts forever and it’s a good whisky approach.
To keep or not to keep?

This question has come to any cask owner at least once and it never has the right answer.

Whisky industry despite its long and rich history is changing rapidly. With new technologies new methods come hand in hand and you always need to keep up with the news to be on track.
And however it has a certain stability which lets make some predictions.

When a cask owner comes to a point of deciding their cask future they always need to look at the market situation. Profound analysis may help greatly with the exit strategy and will bring great profit.

Another trick deals with human nature. People like beautiful numbers and whisky aged for 10-15-20-25 and etc. are more appealing just because it looks nice. There is not a big difference with their peers in taste, flavour or other important qualities.

Anyway, we are always happy to give you counsel. Contact us for more.
Neither too young nor too old. Can it appeal to a whisky cask?

Definitely it can.

Previously we mentioned that the average age of bottling is somewhere between 10 and 20 considering the private bottling sector. Famous distilleries however tend to release whiskies of any age – it can be 7, 8, 12 or 17. Doesn’t matter because everyone knows the brand.

Anniversary casks with round numbers look more appealing. However, it does not mean that if your cask turns 16 in cannot be bottled, but at the age of 20 it will definitely look more appealing.
If speaking about falvour, taske and other characteristics it always deals with a cask type and the number of its refills. A fresh cask transfers to whisky a little bit different qualities that a cask after a few refills.

At the end we would like to give you a piece of advice – whenever you doubt, contact us.
You may appear tactless if you ask a lady about her age but in terms of whisky it is one of the first things one should do.

Well, many men have many minds. Tastes differ and a ton of other saying when it comes to the age of whisky.

Some people prefer the young ones because of its energy and let us say youth. Indeed, young whiskies may be more bright but at the same time the flavour is quite invariable. And yet some regions are famous for its youngsters – the Islay region is one of them.

On the other hand there are old spirits (‘old’ means more than 30 years) which flavour is so multifaceted that you may need more than one tasting to feel it all.

It is proved that whisky gets from 50% to 80% percent of its qualities being in a cask but this being differs greatly and in many aspects depends on pure luck. You never know what the result will be, but it’s always so intriguing.
Every detail matters.

We’ve discussed slightly some aspects that are capable of influencing whisky qualities but they all deal with whisky in storages – no matter wooden or glass. But what is whisky made for? For drinking it surely. It means we have to consider aspects influencing whisky when it is free from a bottle and is in its almost final position – in a glass.

The most popular and even hyped is the form you can see in the picture. Wide and round or square. Indeed, this glass became associated with whisky consumption years ago but there always needs to be an alternative. What is important is that whisky gets warm very quickly unless there is ice in the glass.

Glasses, used for degustation by seasoned whisky connoisseurs, are of a different shape. It has a certain narrowing in the middle of a glass body that helps to accumulate the flavour. Moreover, it usually has a special base to hold so that body warmth can be controlled.

What’s your favourite glass type?
